Initially when developing/designing a page for the iPhone it was one browser and it used webkit. It was easy, very easy. Sure there were a few other browsers out there, but nothing that didn't use webkit.
Now I, like most iPhone users came from another smart phone previously and was mostly happy with my conversion, but missed a few small things like removable memory, buttons, etc. For anyone who had a blackberry or something like it(fill in with whatever generic smart phone you had that didn't have a real browser) there was Opera.
And it was great, unlike my blackberry browser it worked; it supported external Style and JS among many other thing you would expect in a actual browser.
Now however, Opera has come to the iPhone and to my dismay...is making my development difficult. First thing I do after I download is visit the latest site I had written for an iPhone of course it does not look or work the same. Not to mention when coming to a site from Opera on the iPhone the standard detection used for iPhones is no longer recognized.
So, what does this mean, do I go back and re-write?
Do I shrug off Opera and its user base?
Do I write a separate site for just Opera users?
I don't know, at this point I don't. So lets look at the Numbers.
iPhone Users - 6.4 Million (source)
Safari Users (all platforms) - 5.5% market share (source)
Opera mobile/mini Users (all platforms) - 30 million+ (source)
Opera Users (all platforms) - 2.1% market share (source)
